Nyamira County is set to recruit 181 additional healthcare workers in a move aimed at addressing staffing gaps and strengthening the delivery of health services across the county.
The recruitment will comprise 100 nurses, while the remaining positions will be allocated to clinical officers, laboratory specialists and other healthcare cadres. The county government is expected to advertise the vacancies within the next two weeks.
Speaking at Nyagacho Dispensary in Borabu Sub-County, Governor Amos Nyaribo said his administration was continuing to implement measures aimed at improving healthcare services, in line with the development agenda he outlined during the 2022 campaign.
Governor Nyaribo said the county had made progress in addressing persistent challenges in the health sector, particularly the availability of medicines.
“I am happy that, as I promised during my 2022 campaign development agenda, I have improved health services for our people. After introducing the Drug Revolving Fund, we have ended the shortage of medicine,” he said.
The governor also pointed to increased investment in human resources and medical equipment at Nyamira County Referral Hospital, saying the interventions had expanded the range of services available locally and reduced referrals to hospitals outside the county.
He cited the establishment of an orthopaedic department at the referral hospital as one of the key achievements, noting that patients suffering from limb fractures can now access specialised treatment within Nyamira rather than being referred to facilities outside the county.
Nyaribo said the latest recruitment would particularly focus on strengthening staffing at rural health facilities.
“We are going to employ more nurses and laboratory specialists to staff our rural health facilities,” he said.
The governor made the announcement after officially opening Nyagacho Dispensary, where he said the facility would immediately receive one laboratory technician and two additional nurses.
The deployment is expected to support the planned upgrading of the dispensary to a Level 3 health facility, enabling it to provide a wider range of healthcare services to residents in the surrounding communities.
The planned recruitment and expansion of services come as the county government seeks to improve access to healthcare, strengthen staffing at lower-level facilities and reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for services available within the county.
