Nyamira gubernatorial aspirant Walter Chanua has drawn criticism from some residents after making bold claims about his financial capacity during his political engagements in the county.
Chanua, who hails from North Mugirango, has reportedly told residents that he does not seek the governor’s seat because he needs money, but because he wants to transform Nyamira.
In one of his remarks, Chanua claimed that he has enough financial capacity to pay the salaries of all nine governors in the South Rift, including his own boss, Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, as an illustration of his financial strength and ability to manage county resources.
Chanua has attributed his wealth to his business ventures, including poultry farming. He currently serves in Narok County’s finance administration, and public records identify him as a senior finance official in the county.
His remarks have nevertheless sparked debate among some Nyamira residents, with critics questioning whether personal wealth should be presented as evidence of one’s suitability to lead a county.
Chanua is among politicians positioning themselves for the 2027 Nyamira gubernatorial race. His political ambitions have also attracted attention because he comes from North Mugirango, the same area associated with incumbent Governor Amos Nyaribo.
As the race for the Nyamira governorship takes shape, Chanua’s emphasis on financial capacity is likely to remain part of the wider debate over the kind of leadership residents want in 2027.
