Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has urged leaders to support and mentor students from disadvantaged families, saying education support can help vulnerable learners build a better future.
Speaking at Kebirigo Boys High School during a mentorship programme for 244 students benefiting from the Nyamira County Mentorship and Scholarship Programme, Nyaribo urged leaders to extend support to needy students beyond government-sponsored programmes.
“These students who are under County scholarship and many others should be assisted,” Nyaribo said.
The Governor also challenged scholarship beneficiaries to share the knowledge and lessons gained through mentorship with other students who are not part of the program.
He encouraged the students to identify and develop their talents, saying skills and talents could help them build successful careers and secure their livelihoods.
The mentorship session also brought together former scholarship beneficiaries who have excelled academically. Last year, 13 students under the county scholarship programme attained grades of A- and above and were recognised for their performance.
The students were also encouraged to serve as role models for the 244 candidates preparing to sit their KCSE examinations this year.
Gladwel Mokaya, a student at Nyambaria High School, thanked Governor Nyaribo for giving him an opportunity to study at a national school. He said he was determined to score a minimum grade of A in this year’s KCSE.
Lydia Nyamoita of Menyenya High School said the scholarship had given her a second chance after losing her parents, enabling her to continue with her education and pursue her ambitions.
The mentorship programme seeks to combine financial support with guidance to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds improve their academic performance and prepare for life beyond secondary school.
